The Eyes That Roam Discreetly

                                                      Trinidad, Colorado

Everything sometimes falls apart
As you made that statement
I was trying desperately to think of a counter
Thoughts came much to late
There was nothing left, not one
Rational thought or even emotional quip
The words refused to present themselves
In an orderly manner

Scrambled, like snippets of conversation
Overheard in a bar
Scattered, like the remains of a bonfire
In the morning, ashes cold and gray

What is that feeling that is sometimes so right
Sometimes the sweetest feeling that can be imagined
Yet sometimes the most plaintive
Like a cold and hungry abandoned cat's
Wail.
That you wish you'd never heard
It doesn't haunt your dreams
You just hear it occasionally as you walk alone

Conscious as a doomed captive
Of every ray of light that filters through the bars
Or of traces of the perfume
That the Warden's wife left lingering in the hall

Damn, I used to dance without embarrassment
Never scared, always uninhibited
Loud indiscriminate movements to the infinite
As if death waited on the edge of the floor
With a straight-edge razor ready for my throat
Feeling like a snakecharmer I swayed
To appease and placate the hearts
Of all the lords seeking to deny me the exuberance of youth
