Settling For Adequate

Why yes, now that you mention it, I do miss the beach

Pretty sure he never intended to become bitter
Like everyone else he just hoped everything would be alright
Never thought he would end up a quitter
Now he looks like he's been grilled under a klieg light

He really tried, he swears he did
Gave it everything he had in his effort to win
At least that's what he keeps telling himself
Everytime he looks at the 4th place trophy on the shelf
He put himself out there, he took chances
Not all the fruit he picked was from the lowest branches

A risk-adverse life requires a lot of settling
A lot of giving up and a lot of mediocrity
Toes in the water but never jumping in
Dressing for the fight but never really battling

The limitations placed upon oneself are the worst
The absolute worst
The limitations built upon cowardice and fear
One thousand forms of fear

The limitations placed upon oneself are the worst
The absolute worst
The limitations built upon cowardice and fear
One thousand forms of fear

Half-measures never make for a complete life
Wake up one morning drowning in regrets
For the risks not taken and opportunities skipped
Never doing more than the minimum that would suffice

The limitations placed upon oneself are the worst
The absolute worst
The limitations built upon cowardice and fear
One hundred forms of fear
