Will Stand Here On This Corner And Hold A Sign To Guilt You Into Giving Me Your Spare Change

                                                               Bummin'

The guy had more issues than National Geographic
He'd been in out of the hole at least ten times
Somehow he had come to the conclusion
That his lifestyle should be supported by the general public
"Society screwed me, so screw society" he ranted

Talked about how he had made it out west from Long Island
Of his family back there who didn't care
If he lived or if he died
Somehow he had gotten love confused
with something pornographic

Asked how long he'd been homeless
He replyed he wasn't homeless
He lived in the world
Said he had friends and even a woman
Who exchanged attention for physical affection

He looked to be about fifty in his early thirties
But he never celebrated his birthday
Loved his weed, booze and occasionally some meth
Asked if anyone knew anyone who was carrying
Hoped to one day hook-up with a nurse

"Women in their forties always give me a bill or two"
He looked past the first two cars to a minivan
"And these older dudes, they'll want to take me home
But I ain't down with that shit."
The minivan drove past with an indifferent Asian woman at the wheel

Everything he had was kept in a beat up knapsack
"I'm living the dream, man, got no obligations"
His teeth showed the effects of the crystal
A car slowed at the corner and a woman held out her hand
With a few dollars and a copy of a flyer for a church
