In the land of the people of the mountains
Once, a short time ago, we sat in restaurants
Bars, cafes, church meeting rooms, union halls, clubs
We looked at one another
Or at least in the general area
Where we would be
Seated or standing
There was a certain space we kept ourselves in
And
Depending on how intimate
We wanted our contact to be
We maintained a space between us
Consciously or subconsciously
We sized each other up, we gauged, we judged
Eyes were looked into or avoided
Expressions, smiles, grimaces, smirks
All were given weight
All were awarded a degree of magnitude
Posture, lean, angle, tone, pitch
All of it was taken and processed
Possible friends or foes determined within seconds
Now
We I.M.
Chat online
Send text messages
Coupled with emoticons
Hoping the words we type out
Are enough
To convey what we feel, what we mean
Hoping to reach another human
Without having to risk meeting another human
