I have written in the past that one of the disappointing aspects about growing old is discovering just how bad some of what you really enjoyed when you were younger actually is.
For example: Disney live action movies from the '60's and '70's. They are absolutely horrid, without exception. The Boatniks? How in the h. e. double hockey sticks did that get green lit?
That being said, one of the better aspects about growing old is discovering just how good some of what you really enjoyed when you were younger actually is.
For example: The movie Casablanca. I watched that for the first time when I was a tyke, on XETV6, one of the independent Mexican stations that broadcast into San Diego.
XETV6 showed a lot of old movies and 1960's and '70's television shows and cartoons - it was the Nickelodeon channel before there was a Nickelodeon channel.
As an adult I have watched Casablanca with an extremely critical eye, and it has held up. To the point where I consider it the best movie ever made. The story is compelling, the dialogue is natural, and the characters are all believable.
The only flaw in the whole movie is the casting of Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa Lund. She is just too...gorgeous. This is probably a bit sexist of me, but that role needed a grittier, less fragile actress, Bette Davis maybe.
Oh, and the whole German army in Casablanca thing. Never happened. No German troops ever occupied Casablanca during WWII.
But other than that, it's awesome.
