The young girl (5, maybe 6 years old) ran over to the motionless little bird that lay on the sidewalk. She crouched down and stared at the bird intently while her mother ran to catch up to her.
"Don't touch it Sweetie", her mother exhorted, "It might not be safe".
The crouched-over little girl turned her head as her mother approached and said, "It's a bird, Mama, and it's sleeping."
The mother stood over her daughter and caught her breath. After a few seconds she said, "No Fran, it's not sleeping, it's dead. We should go now".
