A Derecho is a powerful, dangerous storm and can cause extensive damage. The Midwestern states of the U.S. get hit by one every two to four years and on the same day that Vinton was hit in July of 2011, Chicago, Illinois was hit and in the aftermath 860,000 people were left without electrical power.
The Derecho that hit Vinton destroyed quite a few of the older, large trees in and around the community. During the clean up that followed, one enterprising and seriously talented sculptor, Brian Parr*, took a chainsaw to a number of the trees felled by the storm.
*I'm assuming the chainsaw sculptures are all by Brian Parr, as I could find no other attribution and they all appear to be his style. If I've misapplied attribution, my apologies.
