Every Vampire Yearns To Be Alive
The greatest tragedy of her youth
She patiently explained to me
Was the complete and utter lack
Of a great tragedy
Nothing to make her feel grateful
For having survived
Nobody to hold in contempt
For having died
Before she had a chance to get to loathe them
She never had been given the opportunity
To lie in bed awake
Late at night
Dreading a Stepfather coming down the hall
She never had been given the opportunity
To scream at her mother for ruining her life
Her parents
She pathetically explained
Were well-adjusted, happy and content
As Husband and Wife
And she would never be able to forgive them for that
The neighborhood she was raised in
Was sorely lacking in degenerates
Not a single reprobate
To bless her with a haunting scar
Everything she did
To manufacture a little disgrace
From her first girlfriend
To the piercings on her face
Was looked upon as discovery and expression
By those damn fools
So after three children
And eleven years of relative bliss
She left her husband
And the church
Moved to the coast
Got a job in a hospital
Hoping for a little sorrow she could steal
Like a vampire
To make her feel alive
