Near Ouray, Colorado, 2012
Everybody has family members
That drive them to the brink
The ones at family gatherings
Who speak before they think
Asking if gay cousin Gerry
has found a girlfriend
Or if deceased Aunt Eileen
Is on the mend
Some people wish they
Would go away
But those are the very people
I would beg to stay
Reveling in their refusal
To play by society's dictates
Setting off arguments
And fiery debates
The world needs gnats
That can stir up the nest
It's not a family party
If no one's insulted a guest
Twenty years down the road
Sister Ann's dress won't be what you remember
What everyone will still be talking about
Is the day Mom cursed and lost her temper
