Famous Lost Words

Small portion of a watercolor done in 1996 featuring Turnagain Arm

The expression on her face
Like a cat about to pounce
Something bad was about to take place
Everything seemed to be out of balance

Apparently she wasn't very happy with him again
What the hell was it this time he wondered
Damn, she was getting to be such a pain
Maybe it was time for him to become unencumbered

She cleared her throat and asked him to explain
Why he left so hurriedly this morning
I want the truth she said, intently
Don't spare my feelings, let me know
We're not going anywhere until you open up
So you might as well tell me now

This is it, he thought
This was the moment he had been hoping for
His best shot
Of telling her the real score

He would tell that he was tired of her possessiveness
And that her false accusations only made it worse
He would tell her he was tired of her selfishness
And her judgmental attitude and lack of remorse

He cleared his throat and wracked his brain
For the words that just minutes ago were swarming
He drew a blank, empty
All those practiced truths, where did they go
Once again he just sat there like a helpless pup
Knowing what he wanted to say but not knowing how
