Union Bus Station, OKC, Oklahoma June 2012
Accidentally he found himself in the city
At the same time they were looking for men like him
Willing to work long hours for little pay
Willing to keep at it Monday through Sunday
He had nowhere else to go and nothing else to do
He spends a lot of time sweeping dirt and trash out to the street
With a push broom that has worn down to nubs
Cars gambol past him without a second thought
He likes to keep things tidy in the station parking lot
Counting down the hours until he can pop a cold brew
The years of his youth had been misspent
The typical women and drink and a little bit of the hard stuff
There had been a wife once, and a bright eyed, beautiful kid
They forced him away though for something bad he did
Now he sips tepid coffee in the morning with the rest of the crew
The sun is setting as he makes ready for the end of his shift
His arms cradling the paper and a beat up lunch box
With a wave and a g'night he heads out to the Piper's Den
It is six o'clock and happy hour is ready to begin
He has nowhere else to go and nothing else to do
