John Champlin Gardner, Jr. passed away 30 years ago today. He failed to negotiate a curve on Route 92 in Pennsylvania, lost control of his bike on the dirt shoulder, and was thrown from his Harley. Died in transit to the hospital.
He was a 49 years old, and had accomplished much with his life - he wrote novels (Grendel, The Sunlight Dialogues, October Light), was a University Professor, and published a controversial book of literary criticism, On Moral Fiction.
That particular work is where I found this:
We should all aspire to discover those human values that are universally sustaining.
I do not know if that thought, that philosophy, originated with him - I could probably spend a few minutes on Google and find out, but it's late, I'm tired, Charlie Brown teacher voice.
I know I like it. I like what it asks of us, as I believe that to be a noble aspiration.
And I'm all about the noble aspirations.
Life well lived Mr. Gardner, life well lived.
